If I have known about the Lenovo Blog U-Rap Contest I would tried my luck and wrote a rap song lyric and joined the contest. My rap chorus lyrics would have added semi mount diamond ring in it. Too bad the registration ended yesterday. The contest was not well promoted, I only knew about 3 days ago. Rapping starts on Aug 27 to Sept 2.

What’s this about? It used to be “pen is mightier than the sword” but with the power of the internet and social media, a blog or blog post is more powerful and mightier  than a sword, snow chains for trucks, a bomb or the Arroyo’s (maybe not). Remember the London riot, social media played a big part in making it happen. That’s how powerful social media and blogs are now. So what’s Blogapalooza? Just you wait and see.

Lica De Guzman – Making Us Proud

Born in Geneva on March 8, 1997 to Filipino migrant workers, Nicanor “Bong” de Guzman and Waonhor “Joy” Pangulima, Lica is the newest singing child sensation to hit the Philippine Community in Geneva where there are a lot of homes for rent.

Lica de Guzman started singing at the age of 4. At that early age, she would enjoy singing some animation songs from Walt Disney’s Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Alladin and Mulan. By the time she was 5 years old, she joined the Adelea 2 Music Kids Academy of Geneva under the supervision of Miss Evelyn Fischer. At school, she was often requested to perform a song or two whenever there was an occasion or a festival. Aside from her singing talent, she is also gifted with the ability to dance and act in theatre performances.

In 2004, a breakthrough for Lica soon came when she was invited to perform at the famous annual Carabina Festival in Crans-Celigny as one of the “Caribanakids”. The tiny 7-year old stunned the crowd with her angelic voice that won the hearts of many spectators, including her fellow performers and artists. It was a like a “baptism of fire” for Lica as she was the only child who sang a solo performance.

During her vacation in the Philippines that same year, she took “Sunshine Davao” by storm and again captivated the Davaoeños with her awesome performance. She gave a benefit concert for street children of the Bantay Bata Kids 163 at Gaisano Mall in Davao City on 9 August 2004 which was sponsored by the number one fast-food chain “Jollibee”.

In Davao City, she had a busy schedule as she performed in SBD Jam and Halo-Halo Special, two of the most successful and popular shows in Davao City. She also toured the popular radio stations in the city, singing songs that reached out to the common tao even to the far-flung barrios through their portable transistor radios.

Christmas 2004 became a special and memorable one for Lica. This was because she was selected to join Sonia Grimm, a well-known singer not only in Geneva, but also in Europe, to do back up vocals on her Christmas CD.

In 2005, Lica went on and took voice lessons every Wednesdays and was under the supervision of Miss Christel Pechin. As part of the Philippine Independence Day 2005 string of celebrations in Geneva, Lica performed in the show of Philippine noon time matinee idol Randy Santiago and singer Rachel Alejandro in 10 June. Lica was also part of the 11 June 2005 Philippine Community Independence Day Kermesse at the St Nicolas de Flue Church.

Christmas 2005 was the biggest break for Lica as she was invited to a Televison Suisse Romande (TSR 1) show as one of the guest child singers in the Christmas special presentation of “Les coups de coeur d’Alain Morisod” which was shown last 17 December.

Then, this was quickly followed up by another show on Christmas day where Lica, who they dubbed as “petite perle philippine” was a surprise guest in “Rêves”: A new musical Show for Christmas! This special television programme was a co-production of French-speaking Switzerland Television (TSR) and Foundation Little Dreams (LDF). Other special guests included the young talents of the LDF, Little Dreams Band, the godmothers and godfathers of LDF, Orianne and Phil Collins – founders of LDF – as well as many recognized artists – Lara Fabian, Laura Pausini, Michael Jones, Lorie and Julien Laurence. It was in this show where Orianne Collins announced that Lica was selected as one of the 10 children from throughout the world to become a Little Dream Foundation member.

Last May 19, 2007, she was again invited at the “Les coups de Coeur d’Alain Morisod where she sang “Prendre un enfant par la main” before the Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey.

The year 2007 has been a great year for Lica as she has also been invited to sing at various UN gatherings like the annual United Nations Womens Guild bazaar, Filipino events, and even church activities.

In 2008 Lica worked on new songs for a forthcoming album which was released by Dinemec Records. Lica also recorded a single at Dinemec Studios entitled “Brand New Day” which was also be released in the Philippines (in Tagalog and English). She also did some performances in December 2008 in Manila and in Europe in the spring of 2009.

2010 was definitely Lica’s year. News of her talent spread like wildfire and she performed at the Montreux Jazz at the Parc Vernex with the Little Dreams Foundation Band that year. She likewise joined several concerts with the LDF band in Gland and in other various places like Gstaad and St. Tropez.

Her talent could no longer be ignored as the world learned more about her. In fact, a French documentary about her young life and talent was featured by the  French Channel Direct 8.

She performed with global celebrities like Laura Pausini, Phil Collins, Bryan Adams, Jermaine Jackson and Mike Rutherford during that momentous concert for the Little Dreams Foundation. Her rendition of the song “Everything I Do” with Bryan Adams and Phil Collins was a hit in Geneva, Switzerland.

She has an upcoming solo benefit concert scheduled July 2nd, 2011 to help move the parish from Petit Seconnex to Saint Nicolas de Flue in support of a bigger Church for the faithful.

HotelwithHeart.com Donates the Pencils from its Signature Campaign

PHILIPPINES, 30 July 2011 – Just right after a storm, HotelwithHeart.com (HWH) brought a silver lining to the hearts of the children of Cavite City.

Last 1 June 2011, HotelwithHeart.com organized a signature campaign that would donate one pencil for every signature it collects on its Facebook fan page. It was like an archery equipment with arrows striking people’s hearts. With 5,000 pencils on hand and some copies of Dan’s Dynamic Dictionary on Science by Daniel Ng, the HWH staff went to visit Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) in their home base at the “Kariton Building” located in Cavite City on 30 July 2011. Alex Villaflores Oliva and Cedric Zapanta, two officers of DTC and volunteer teachers were there to give HotelwitHeart.com a warm welcome. Cedric said of the occasion, “These pencils will be of great help to our Kariton Klasrum as well as to our Outreach Program.” Dynamic Teen Company’s continuous outreach program is the primary motivation for HotelwithHeart.com to continue extending help to DTC.

The opportunity to bless the lives of children even in such a small area as Barangay Caridad, Cavite City is something that can never be taken for granted. Some of the teachers were once students of Efren Penaflorida (2009 CNN Hero of the Year) himself, and now the former students are teaching the new students. All it takes for change to happen is someone selfless enough to initiate it.

Alex (current president of DTC) guided the HWH staff over the other side of the road, where DTC volunteers were teaching the children. “Most of the families living here are living in deep poverty. You can see the narrow walkways, the flooded streets, and the small houses. But at the same time, you can see the children’s enthusiasm to learn from these volunteer teachers. There’s hope in their eyes”, says Manu Ofiaza, one of the HWH Event Organizers to document the event, “and we at HotelwithHeart.com intends to keep that fire of hope burning.”

AboitizPower When We Play Alter Space the planet wins

MANILA, Philippines–It’s not just a fun online game. Alter Space is the first Filipino online game on Facebook that teaches gamers how they can help protect the planet. For blogger Richard Mamuyac, playing Alter Space improved his perspective regarding environmental concerns—it also helped him get his very own iPad 2. He won the iPad after getting proclaimed the grand winner in a contest sponsored by AbotizPower (PSE ticker symbol: AP) for Nuffnang bloggers.

In Alter Space, players learn how to make sensible, practical choices in their daily life—all of which help reduce the effects of global warming and climate change, and decrease carbon emissions in our atmosphere—while simultaneously enjoying the game.

These choices are presented as part of various tasks and mini-games that the player has to accomplish, across increasing levels of difficulty and rewards.  Alter Space was developed by AboitizPower as part of its advocacy to promote a sustainable, planet-friendly lifestyle. Ultimately, adopting such a lifestyle will preserve and protect the planet for future generations.

AboitizPower also does its own environmental efforts by providing and promoting Cleanergy, its brand of clean and renewable energy. By doing these, AboitizPower helps ensure that its business does not harm the environment and protects the health of its host communities.

Richard, who blogs at Astig Machisms, is networked at the bloggers advertising site, Nuffnang. Bloggers who joined the contest were asked to blog about the topic “What you can do to encourage people to save the environment?”  His blog post bested 63 submitted entries.

“Playing Alter Space makes me proud to be Filipino because it is the very first Pinoy-made Facebook environmental game. Another testament that we have an amazing talent.  Plus the fact that you don’t just enjoy the game, you learn how to save the environment in simple deeds,” says Richard.

Richard wrote about his experience playing Alter Space in his blog and  that entry made him win the Alter Space bloggers competition.

“Of course, the iPad 2 as a prize is very enticing. But what made me decide to join the contest is because I have a story to share.  I thought that in my own little way, in this case through blogging, I can convince others to make a difference in saving our environment,” says Richard.

Richard says he became concerned about disasters and the welfare of the planet when the news about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan spread through the Web. It was while he was posting a comment on a friend’s video on Facebook that he learned about Alter Space.

He became so interested in Alter Space that he wrote in his blog:

“AboitizPower is the bighearted company who came up of the idea of giving gamers a fun way to learn practical tips on earth-friendly living. This means a lifestyle that helps reduce the effects of global warming, climate change and carbon emissions on the planet.

“I think this game is very timely and relevant, not to mention the great fun you’ll have while playing. I want to describe this innovative game as ASTIG for Alter Space is a Technology to Inspire a Generation. AboitizPower is definitely using the right platform to reach out to the online community and make them aware of the need to do something for our beloved Mother Earth.”

Personal stake

Richard says that his blog entry about Alter Space became something personal because he wrote it during the time when he was reading up on the recent disasters in Japan and other calamities that threaten the planet, especially the man-made ones.

“My entry is a combination of what I have read in the news online and on broadsheets and the features and documentaries on TV that I’ve watched.  I also shared my fears as a parent. I just want my son to enjoy a better and safer world,” he says.

Richard adds that purely as a game, he enjoys playing Alter Space—but the advocacy behind it also changed his perspective. “The game will test users to balance happiness, money and carbon footprints in the planet to avoid disaster.  In a way, playing Alter Space challenges my prioritizing skills.  Honestly, saving the environment is not in my short list of my priorities in life.  But playing this game made me realize that I can help and take part in making our world a better place to live in,” he explains.

Together with that change in perspective came a sense of urgency. Richard says that he now not only applies the lessons in Alter Space in his every day life, he also encourages others to play the game as well.

“It made me more aware of the urgency for people to work hand in hand in saving our planet — the only one that we have. I wrote an entry about Alter Space in my advocacy blog called Mapagbigay ka ba?. I also informed my friends via Facebook and Twitter,” he says.

Richard adds that the various trivia that are flashed during the game are very helpful in teaching users how to care for the environment and live in a sustainable manner. “One trivia information says that LED lights uses less energy and last longer than incandescent bulbs. I found that one to be most useful. Being a family man, I am always on the look out for energy-saving tips and practical advice for homes. Playing Alter Space inspired me to a little wiser in my decisions not only for my family but for the environment as well. Today, all our rooms in the house use LEDs for their lighting,” he reveals.

New Alter Space apps

Aside from the game, Alter Space’s Facebook page has introduced two new applications that empower users even more when it comes to protecting the environment. The apps are the “Carbon Footprint (CF) Calculator” and the “Cleanergy Charger Monitor”.

The Alter Space CF Calculator helps an individual measure his personal “carbon footprint” (the amount of carbon emissions from a certain activity) so he or she can make lifestyle changes and choose activities that leave a smaller carbon footprint. Keeping one’s carbon footprint small reduces the amount of carbon in the atmosphere—this in turn reduces the effects of global warming and climate change.

The Alter Space CF Calculator measures the amount of carbon footprint that each of the user’s activities leaves behind. After a user enters the type of activity, the app will compute the size of the carbon footprint. So the app serves as a guide for the user on what activities to do less or avoid, and which activities to choose more often. Choosing activities that leave smaller carbon footprints helps lessen global warming and protects the environment.

On the other hand, the Cleanergy Charger Monitor is a dowloadable app for cellphones. It alerts you when your phone has a full charge. The alert reminds you that, by unplugging the charger, you are also protecting the planet in your own way.

If millions of Facebook users play Alter Space, download these apps and use them in their daily routine, they will not only help reduce the planet’s total carbon emissions—they will also adapt a more sustainable, Earth-friendly lifestyle that will benefit future generations.

So log-on to www.facebook.com/AlterSpaceGame, download these new apps, and do your part in protecting our planet and environment for future generations.

Alter Space blog contest winner Richard Mamuyac, in his own way, has done his part in saving the environment by raising awareness about the  first Filipino online, environmental game on Facebook.

The Senator I Thought I Knew

One of the perks of being  blogger is getting to meet celebrities but it’s nothing compared to meeting a politician and having a casual, non-political, conversation. This memorable event happened August 4, 2011 at one of Senator Gringo Honasan‘s favorite restaurant – Cravings, Katipunan.

I only know very little about the senator’s life.  I can only link him to the EDSA Revolution, the Coup attempts, and Barbie Almabis and I am very thankful to be given an opportunity to be able to know him more as a grandfather, father, husband and a Filipino.  First time I saw him he had this very welcoming smile, very far from the what I expected of a senator and a former military officer.  He still has that tight grip hand shake though.  Still dashing despite his age. He was the first to ask a question before we even began sitting, he asked what would we want to eat.  He mentioned that during his youth he can eat anything he wants but as he ages he now avoids eating anything that would compromise his health.

The senator is also into Social Media, in fact had a tweet exchange with musician Jim Paredes which he said he deeply regretted. He said social media has brought the worst and the best in us.  He believes that it also is a way getting back at mainstream media which doesn’t always tell the truth.

I didn’t know he was a champion skydiver I always thought his type plays at ping pong tables. He experimented on a lot of dishes with chicharon as . He’s a playmate to his grandchildren and has mastered the art of connecting to an alternate universe when his wife begins to nag.  Something I wish he shares to others or set up a workshop for it.  But he admits that he’ll go after anyone who harms his family in any way.

There were a lot of personal questions asked and he answered all of them.  I was able to know him more and better than what  I read from the papers or watched on TV.  I enjoyed having to hear him talk and share his ideas and seeing a former military officer, a senator share a laugh.  It’s a very memorable night indeed. Thanks!

They may not have won the game against Kuwait but they definitely won the hearts of Filipinos.  We now know that we can compete in a sport that we have not dared enter. We’ve beaten countries that has been playing football longer than we’ve known football.  I admit, I do not know how the sport was played.  I only see them in the news but have no idea what the rules are. It is a very physical game, running back an fort a huge field for almost 2 hours. I also saw players get hurt or injured.  I even saw a video of a player, literally breaking a leg.

I am just glad that no one got injured or a knee brace meniscus tear.  To the Azkals, you guys did your best and it was more than what we have expected from a football freshmen.

OPM Boyband 1:43 Translates Online Popularity To Phenomenal Album Sales

OPM pop sensation 1:43 (pronounced as “one forty-three”) rule the local record bars with their debut album “Time for Love” by consistently being on the top 10 bestselling OPM album charts since it was launched in April.

Now on its third print, the slambum or slambook-album under MCA Music continuously rakes sales and competes with the records of popular OPM artists despite having minimal television and radio exposures. In fact, it landed on the No. 2 spot in Odyssey’s top OPM albums last April. “Time for Love” currently enjoys the No. 4 spot in the Best-selling OPM Album Chart of Astroplus. I sells faster than any disability insurance I tried to sell.

1:43’s popularity is likewise evident in their school and campus shows that are always packed with screaming fans, especially teenage girls, that go crazy over them.

“We did not expect this kind of reception because 1:43 isn’t getting so much radio and TV mileages yet. I think their phenomenal sales shows that the boy band’s online popularity is translating into huge album sales,” says talent manager and music producer Chris Cahilig.

1:43 have also conquered the fashion scene by being the new ambassadors of innovative teen retail brand F’g Freshgear. Their bus ads can be seen along the main roads of Metro Manila.

“While there will be big movements in the musical career of 1:43 in the coming months including a music grant from a huge Filipino fast food chain, we are focusing our efforts in bringing the boy band and their brand of OPM pop music closer to their youth fan base,” adds Chris.

1:43 is composed of four talented, charming, and stylish lads, namely, Anjo Resurreccion, a University of Santo Tomas Psychology graduate and a member of a university theater group; Gold Aquino, a Business Administration student from the Centro Escolar University (CEU) and a campus heartthrob; Kim Nicolas, a Nursing student from Trinity University of Asia and a Candy Magazine model; and Yuki Sakamoto, an Hotel and Restaurant Management student from CEU-Makati and the main vocalist of the group. The boy band was initially marketed in social networking sites like Facebook and Youtube before their official release.

“Time for Love” is a collection of feel-good original Pinoy pop songs, including their minus one versions. It also gives music fans a glimpse of the personal lives of the 1:43 members as it features interesting and revealing trivia of the boys, plus their exclusive photos.

What probably makes “Time for Love” a huge hit among music lovers is the refreshing mix and sounds of the songs as well as their heartfelt lyrics. Critically acclaimed producer and arranger Jonathan Ong of SonicState Studio and brilliant singer-composer and vocal arranger Myrus collaborated with 1:43 to give the album distinct and feel-good energy.

To date, 1:43’s Fanpage in Facebook has garnered over 33, 000 “Likes” and their YouTube videos are being widely circulated.

“Time For Love” by 1:43 is presented by Glitz and Dreamgirl Cosmetics by 4U2 and is supported by F’g Freshgear Jeans and Avida Towers. More information and updates about 1:43 are available in their official Facebook fan page or you may call Chris Cahilig Talent Services at 6647213 or 6872649 and 92.
