A road trip to the Ambuklao hydroelectric power plant is hardly for the faint-hearted. It may very well be a mere 40 kilometers from idyllic Baguio which, when considering the 210 travelled from Manila, may seem paltry. Just like the history of this majestic piece of history, the road has its ups and downs and, to the uninitiated, may seem like an eternity.

Yet it is well worth it, if only to see for yourself this magnificent marvel of engineering from 60 years past, once again providing electricity to the country after years and years of inactivity.

Checkered past

Ambuklao’s story began in July 1950 when the Guy F. Atkinson Company of San Francisco, USA (it is still around…) broke ground on the construction of the project. Based on the design and engineering of Harza Engineering of Chicago, USA (also still standing as Montgomery Harza) and the Widmark & Platzer Company of Sweden, the project was to have a 129-meter high dam, 452 meters at its crest with a spillway 124-meters wide. The resulting reservoir would extend back 11 kilometers from the dam while three 25-megawatt (MW) Francis horizontal shaft turbine generators made by General Electric provided 75 MW of capacity for the Luzon grid.

She was completed by mid-1956, and began to deliver 41 MW to Meralco in August of the same year. Total project cost was reported to be P132 million. At the time of its inauguration by President Ramon Magsaysay in January 1957, it was the largest hydroelectric power plant in the Philippines in terms of generating capacity, eclipsing 25-MW Maria Cristina hydroelectric power plant in Lanao, likewise completed in 1956.

It could not have come at a better time. The electric appetite of post-war Manila was insatiable, growing at double-digit rates and wreaking havoc on the country’s power planners. In 1956, Meralco’s power sales for the year were 917,000 megawatt-hours (MWh). Despite 185,000 MWh delivered by Ambuklao in 1957, the utility still found itself in need of additional generation and installed another 25-MW unit for its Rockwell power plant in 1958.

By 1959, 100-MW Binga hydroelectric power plant, located 19-kilometers downstream from Ambuklao and dependent on its water, was commissioned. The duo served the Philippines well, together providing 175-MW or enough power for approximately 350,000 households.

Beginning of the end

Sadly, in the earthquake that struck the Philippines in July 1990, heavy siltation began to take place in the Ambuklao reservoir. The accumulation constricted the intake, hindering flow of water into the powerhouse. Numerous attempts by different parties failed to resurrect this sleeping giant. By 1999, Ambukao hydro ceased to produce electricity, languishing in inoperational silence ever since. The degree of siltation was simply too difficult to overcome.

In December 2007, a consortium comprising AboitizPower and SN Power of Norway (SNAP) bid for, and obtained the Ambuklao and Binga plants from the Philippine government for $325 million. The failure of prior attempts to rehabilitate Ambuklao did not deter the new owners—immediately they set out to find a solution to the Ambuklao puzzle.

A tremendous challenge to all

Ambuklao was acquired primarily because of the prospect of bringing it back into working order. This did not take long to be afoot.

“We knew from the start that our work was cut out for us. First, we had to adopt a different strategy to engage our community stakeholders, win social acceptability of our projects, and ensure the sustainability of our business. The facilitated dialogue process sponsored by the World Bank also provided an effective framework for continued communication with our stakeholders. Through our CSR and stakeholders engagement program, we have hurdled these initial challenges and rallied community support and cooperation in our rehabilitation of the Ambuklao plant,” shared SNAP President and CEO Manny Rubio.

In August 2008, contracts were signed with suppliers and by October 2008, excavation and tunneling works commenced. By November 2009, the silted inlet valves that were causing so much trouble were permanently plugged, after which, work in the now completely dry powerhouse could begin. Thus began the dismantling of the old turbines and assemblies.

Rubio added that the rehabilitation of the Ambuklao plant posed enormous technical and logistics hurdles such that previous attempts to rehabilitate the plant did not succeed.

“We were bent on overcoming those challenges, massive as they were, requiring major replacements and construction works in the intake and tunnel areas, the powerhouse, and even the tailrace area. So we had to find the right technical solution, plan alternatives, bring in the right people, acquire the best equipment and find the best way to transport some 90-ton electro-mechanical parts while doing everything in the safest way possible,” he said.

On top of this, SNAP had to constantly consider timing the rehabilitation work during the driest time of the year, considering that the plant was located in the wettest part of the Philippines. Their worst nightmare came true during the onslaught of Typhoon Pepeng (Parma) in 2009 when, at the peak of the rehabilitation work, the Ambuklao and Binga dams experienced record inflows in 60 years. Compounding the problem were the prevalent landslides experienced along the only major road leading to and from Ambuklao, which isolated the area for more than two weeks at height of the typhoon.

A promising renewal

In March 2010, the project team abandoned what had heretofore been the primary water channeling solution, which was the use of the old headrace, or the tunnel that fed water from the intakes into the powerhouse. Additional silt formation from the past year’s typhoon led to this decision and the adoption of the back-up plan: the construction of a new and extended headrace.

“There was a growing sense of pride, gratitude, and even relief that almost three years of rehabilitation work would soon be over. It has been very fulfilling for those who have been involved in this project. Perhaps we can say we made our own little history here, but for the most part we are just happy to bring Ambuklao back to life after 12 years. Now, we are looking forward to full operations. After all, a project is said to be really complete when it starts working for you, rather than you working for it,” observed a delighted Rubio.

SNAP had ensured that no detail was too small for upgrading. The team had replacement done on turbines, main inlet valves, generators, transformers, switchgears, control system, circuit breakers and hydraulic structures (specifically intake gates, draft tube gates and stop logs).

Finally, by May 2, 2011, water was allowed into the tunnel to determine the viability of the new solution. Having passed with flying colors, in May 17 water turned a turbine at Ambuklao Hydro for the first time in more than 20 years. In June 1, it synchronized with the grid and commercial operations began.

As they say, done is better than perfect and the challenges that SNAP faced now faded into the background as they neared the completion of the project.

“To our knowledge, no other plant in the Philippines has undergone rehabilitation work with the scope and magnitude of Ambuklao. We were very determined to be the company that revived Ambuklao and with the successful rehabilitation, also committed to be the company that creates shared value for host communities,” Rubio said.

PRESS RELEASE:

BPI Family Savings Bank, through its Ka-Negosyo business program, recently honored MyClick Technologies, Inc., a software provider company catering to the small businesses in the country, as the bank’s first Ka-Negosyo client booked online.

Melchor Yuson, President and owner of MyClick Technologies, Inc., aims to have a good share in the country’s IT industry and further serve the country’s small businesses through his company. He shares, “We are catering to small business who need a partner that will guide them through their business journey.”

Photo shows (L to R) Franz De Vera, Market Head of Commercial Loans Division, BPI Family Savings Bank; Cedoy Roces, VP and Head of Commercial Loans Division, BPI Family Savings Bank; with BPI Family Ka-Negosyo’s First Client booked online, Melchor Yuson, President and owner of MyClick Technologies, Inc.; and TG Limcaoco, President of BPI Family Savings Bank.

Like his clients, Yuson found a reliable financial partner for his business growth in BPI Family Ka-Negosyo. “Like Mr. Yuson, BPI Family aims to empower the MSME sector with our enhanced business products and services. We aim to make it easy for entrepreneurs to reach for their dream businesses through the BPI Family Ka-Negosyo website,” says Jose Teodoro “TG” Limcaoco, President of BPI Family Savings Bank.

Early this year, BPI Family launched its website, www.bpiloans.com, which provides solutions and tools for the needs of Filipino entrepreneurs. The Ka-Negosyo website is a one-stop shop of business tools for the micro, small and medium entrepreneurs, providing a wide array of features such as Advertisement section, tips and testimonials, business directory, loan assessment tool, loan calculator, easy online loan application, and links to government application business forms.

“There are a lot of entrepreneurs in our country that need financing for their business. However, most businesses do not opt for a loan because of fear – fear of rejection. Most of us are afraid that we get rejected because of many reasons, like our business is small, we don’t have enough collateral and many other doubts. But the Ka-Negosyo website eliminates that fear from us. Through the online assessment tools and application, we are able to determine our loan capacity without other people looking on us. There’s no room for embarrassment because you know it’s just between you and the virtual web. I felt confident when I passed the Ka-Negosyo online assessment quiz and it encouraged me to pursue my loan application. It was even more convenient as I was able to skip the line in the bank and easily submit my application and loan requirements through the website’s online application form,” Yuson shares.

To know more about the BPI Family Ka-Negosyo Business Program, call 754-NEGO, email kanegosyo@bpi.com.ph, text 0917-852NEGO or 0922-869NEGO, or visit any BPI, BPI Family Savings Bank branch nationwide or www.bpiloans.com.

Yeng Constantino‘s second major concert “RakEnRol Jamming with Yeng Constantino” was a success. The talented singer/song writer/director deserves another concert.  It was one of the most memorable three hours of my life.  I have been a fan of her ever since she started with Pinoy Dream Academy.

The rain didn’t stop the fans from watching Yeng Constantino live in concert. The concert started with classic rock songs “We Will Rock You” and “Yugyugan Na“.  The crowd went wild went her guest performed with the rock princess.  Starting with Tutti of 6 Cyclemind, Gloc-9 and her very own idol, Raimund Marasigan.

I regretted that I was not able to bring my camera, I didn’t realize that I can get myself a media pass.  Good thing my phone has enough battery. Yeng also proved that she can not only rock but she is a versatile singer/performer.  She showcased her hip-hop dancing skills and some rapping too.

Her next guest was a the Fil-Canadian Youtube sensation Maria Aragon singing her famous version of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and the song “Price Tag” with Yeng.

My favorite part of the concert was the re-enactment of her multi-awarded music video “Jeepney Love Story” with it’s original cast with Sam Milby sitting in for Piolo Pascual.  It was well-choreographed and very fun to watch.

Yeng also gave tribute to the songs she was listening to when she was still young “Total Eclipse Of The Heart,” “I’ll Be There For You” and “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing”.  Another highlight of the concert was the special appearance of Gary Valenciano that got Yeng teary eyed. Gary has nothing but praises for the talented artist.

Before the show ended Yeng did a her own rendition of a Yano classic, “Banal na Aso Santong Kabayo”. It was an electrifying performance, she owned it! The song is part of Yeng’s latest album “Yeng Versions Live!”, it was first seen and sold at the concert venue.

The concert ended with songs from her first album “Hawak Kamay” and “Salamat”.  It was a concert worth the wait, the rain , the traffic and passing by an alcohol rehab treatment centers . I wish  I had a chance to have a picture taken with her. To Yeng and everyone behind the concert – Congratulations!!!

The Senator I Thought I Knew

One of the perks of being  blogger is getting to meet celebrities but it’s nothing compared to meeting a politician and having a casual, non-political, conversation. This memorable event happened August 4, 2011 at one of Senator Gringo Honasan‘s favorite restaurant – Cravings, Katipunan.

I only know very little about the senator’s life.  I can only link him to the EDSA Revolution, the Coup attempts, and Barbie Almabis and I am very thankful to be given an opportunity to be able to know him more as a grandfather, father, husband and a Filipino.  First time I saw him he had this very welcoming smile, very far from the what I expected of a senator and a former military officer.  He still has that tight grip hand shake though.  Still dashing despite his age. He was the first to ask a question before we even began sitting, he asked what would we want to eat.  He mentioned that during his youth he can eat anything he wants but as he ages he now avoids eating anything that would compromise his health.

The senator is also into Social Media, in fact had a tweet exchange with musician Jim Paredes which he said he deeply regretted. He said social media has brought the worst and the best in us.  He believes that it also is a way getting back at mainstream media which doesn’t always tell the truth.

I didn’t know he was a champion skydiver I always thought his type plays at ping pong tables. He experimented on a lot of dishes with chicharon as . He’s a playmate to his grandchildren and has mastered the art of connecting to an alternate universe when his wife begins to nag.  Something I wish he shares to others or set up a workshop for it.  But he admits that he’ll go after anyone who harms his family in any way.

There were a lot of personal questions asked and he answered all of them.  I was able to know him more and better than what  I read from the papers or watched on TV.  I enjoyed having to hear him talk and share his ideas and seeing a former military officer, a senator share a laugh.  It’s a very memorable night indeed. Thanks!

Last August 1, TV5 and MMDA launch the easiest and most effective way to view the traffic situation in Metro Manila’s major thoroughfares—the Metro Manila Traffic Navigator. TV5′s five-month old online news portal, InterAksyon.com, powers up the site that can be accessed via www.interaksyon.com, or http://mmdatraffic.interaksyon.com/.

MMDA is definitely the most hi-tech and interactive government agency. They started with a twitter account @MMDA and now, in partnership with TV5 they have developed an application that will give real time, on time traffic situation in Metro Manila.  Following the release of its public beta version last June 29, at least 6,000 drivers and commuters have been using the TV5-MMDA Traffic Navigator everyday.

Executed by the all-Filipino cutting-edge web design team, Stray Interactive, the Traffic Navigator’s information design is easy to understand and gives users access to the macro and detailed views of the traffic situation. Online users can also share the traffic situation via Twitter or Facebook with just a click of an icon.

When you click on a location, it tells you the traffic situation and the time it was updated.  It also has a facebook and twitter share button if you want to share them to your friends.

The Line View shows the traffic situation on a road you chose.

Regardless of the operating system, the Traffic Navigator will run and is optimized for any PC-based or mobile browser. It will run on Wintel computers, Macs, Linux machines, iPhones, iPads, Android phones, Windows Mobile, Opera, and any web browser already installed on mobile gadgets.  The Android app is already available for download and is already being used by commuters.

In my case,  I don’t have any of those Android or iOS devices but what I have is a Nokia E7 phone.  I tested the MMDA Traffic Navigator using the Opera Mobile browser  and was able to get great results. It’s very fluid, very light, and it does update real-time.  It does not require heavy bandwidth so it’ll load fast on your phone.

I’ll have to deal with using the Opera Mobile browser first but it’ll also be available on Symbian users soon.

TV5 and MMDA is a great example of adhering to the government’s call of a public-private partnership. I wish that others will follow.

Private - Public - Partnership

Your World, Our World – Connected Through Western Union

Are you the most globally networked individual? Almost all of us has a facebook account (i know you do too) but do you even bother how many friends overseas?  Some of your friends may have gone abroad for work or decided to migrate without you knowing. There this cool Facebook App that will help you locate your friends’current whereabouts based on their facebook accounts.

One of the world’s most globally connected companies, Western Union, is celebrating its 160th anniversary by launching a hunt for the most networked person in the world.

With 470,000 locations in 200 countries and territories. Western Union has an enormous global presence.

To celebrate this unique status, Western Union is calling for the Philippines’ most globally connected individuals to step forward and take the Western Union Network Challenge at www.westernunionworld.com/yourworld.

All you need to do is log in to you Facebook account and then on another tab log on to www.westernunionworld.com and click on your world.  It’ll prompt you to allow the Facebook App to access your account information, just click allow and this will show up.

Your World will show the number of friends you have and the country their in. The app also computes your World Index (number of friends overseas multiplied by the number of countries you have friends with.) In my my World Index is at 540. I know you probably have better scores than I have.  Try it it’s fun.

The column on the ride has a lot of information about Your World.  Your World Rank, Country Rank and Network Rank. Network Rank is your ranking from the number of friends you have using the app. It’s a fun app and very informative.

Now here’s the challenge.  Each individual’s score will also contribute to the score of the respective country of residence which will provide the ranking of the most geographically connected nations.  The Philippines also has the opportunity to prove to be the most geographically connected nation in the world.

Aside from Your World, you can also check out our world.  You can check out the world economic data or you can focus on once country. In the example below I chose the Philippines, of course.  The left side shows the Economic Data, the center shows the map and a time line that you can drag to which ever year you want to check out.  The right side shows Western Union of the Philippines.

Same page different year, 2009.  You can see the changes on the economic data. What captured my attention is the population info. 1980 we’re at 47M after 29 years, 2009 we’re at 92M. You can also see the growth in remittances which only shows that more Filipinos are now overseas.  You can play with the dates and make your own analysis. You nca use this in school for your Economics subject. This is really one great site.

Our history shows Western Union’s time line together with our history.  160 years of Western Union will be an enjoyable time travel.  Again you have to do is drag the time line, it’s reading a pop-up book.

Western Union really knows how to connect people with a  combined network of approximately 470,000 agent locations in 200 countries and territories. In 2010, The Western Union Company completed 214 million consumer-to-consumer transactions worldwide, moving $76 billion of principal between consumers, and 405 million business payments.

They may not have won the game against Kuwait but they definitely won the hearts of Filipinos.  We now know that we can compete in a sport that we have not dared enter. We’ve beaten countries that has been playing football longer than we’ve known football.  I admit, I do not know how the sport was played.  I only see them in the news but have no idea what the rules are. It is a very physical game, running back an fort a huge field for almost 2 hours. I also saw players get hurt or injured.  I even saw a video of a player, literally breaking a leg.

I am just glad that no one got injured or a knee brace meniscus tear.  To the Azkals, you guys did your best and it was more than what we have expected from a football freshmen.

Tunog Natin – Ulit-Ulitin

OPM has continually been struggling due to lack of support from the local media. Radio stations refuse to play their music and television shows don’t want to give new artists enough exposure to promote new songs. I don’t understand people support songs that they don’t even understand, like K-Pop.  They’d rather listen or watch Kpop concerts than local artists. I believe the reason Kpop artists are so popular world wide is supporting their own.  Koreans listen to their own music, promotes or share their love for it and it gets viral just like phenphedrine.

ORIGINAL PILIPINO MUSIC (OPM) is fighting for the hearts and minds of Filipinos—and tonight, that struggle brings together Filipino artists and audiences to the 2nd leg of the “Tunog Natin!” Concert Series, at the grounds of Avida Towers Centera along Edsa. Ironically, the struggle takes a celebratory form, showcasing the genius of Filpino singers, musicians and composers. It’s a tribute and a reminder of how important OPM is to all of us.

The most respected artists in Filipino music from the 1980s, 1990s to the present join forces to prove that OPM will always be relevant to Filipinos.

They include: rock legend The Dawn  which performed hits songs.  The best way to start a concert is The Dawn way.  Fans young and old screamed and sang the lyrics of every song played and jumped at every drum beat.

The legendary Mitch Valdez also graces the show. A veteran of music, theater, film and television, Mitch Valdez is one of the pillars of Original Pilipino Music and one of the founders of the Filipino singers’ organization Organisasyon ng mga Pilipinong Mang-aawit. She is currently the organization’s Chairman of the Board.   She presented the history of OPM and OPM artists through music.  Singing songs that made OPM artists famous.  It was fun and entertaining.

The highlight of tonight’s show is undoubtedly the back-to-back performances of Kitchie Nadal and Barbie Almalbis. Kitchie’s edgy, intense vocals plus Barbie’s distinctly endearing singing style is a combination that will bring audiences back to the 1990s, when these ladies ruled the alternative pop-alternative rock scene.

It was my first time to see Kiss Jane, I have not seen them on TV nor in print. I have heard their songs played on the radio and they were really good. Their songs even became themes songs of Koreanovela’s shown on TV. Kiss Jane really is hot, musically (and physically too). Here’s the proof.

Also performing is singer-songwriter and actress Aiza Seguerra, one of OPM’s most talented hit-makers. First time I saw her play live, and her guitar skills are way awesome. She played the best rendition of the Eraserheads classic “Ang Huling El Bimbo” which I believe is the best. She owned it!

Myrus also came and sang his hit songs.  I thought that 1:43 would make a surprise appearance and perform their duet.

Pinoy Dream Academy Contestant Davey Langit entertained the audience with it’s witty lyric changing jokes that made audience laugh and relate to his comical lyrics.

Everyone was mesmerized with Faith Cuneta’s powerful voice.

Everyone stood up and started singing, jumping, dancing and feeling the music that  Tanya Markova is playing. They were only suppose to play three songs but crowd requested for one more.

The best way to end the night is with True Faith.

OPM needs support it can get. This has nothing to do with piracy but airtime that it gets from radio and TV stations. Piracy is not an issue if you support your artists.
